Santa Anna Attacks Fort Houston

On the eve of Fathers Day i decided to get out my Mexican American war figures and start a game. The scenario was an unexpected strike by a small Mexican Army under Santa Anna (of course) on an American outpost at Fort Houston held by Colonel James (Bowie) Jowett (my son) . It was garrisoned by a Battalion of Infantry, two companies of Rifles and a Mounted Infantry Regiment. Turn one saw the Mexicans advance towards the Bridge leading into town and the American Rifles, Horse Artillery, and Mounted Infantry scatter through town whilst the Fort was stood too.

The Troops in Fort Houston man the defenses and await the Mexican Attack. Mexican Cavalry can be seen comming out from the town flanking the hill just east of the fort.

The Mexicans begin streaming across the Bridge to assualt the town. Just on the other side the Mounted Infantry has dismounted and manned the walls of the Church yard. The Mexicans will take some heavy fire from this unit as they cross the Bridge.

Mexican artillery bombard the church yard whilst infantry storm across the bridge and assualt the walls. It would be several turns before the mounted infantry were ejected from the church yard. The two rifle companies had taken up poistions else where in town and the artillery were forced to redeploy closer to Fort Houston.

After a bitter fight the church yard finally falls to the Mexicans and the mounted Infantry are pushed out. The American Horse battery that redeployed is now giving covering fire to the American units in the town.

Word soon rushes through town that the Mexicans have found a ford across the river. The Mounted Infantry scamble back to their horses and make a dash for the fort. Hotly pursued by Mexican Cavalry. As for the Rifle compaines, they have no chance of making the run for town to they bunker down in one of the town buildings and decide to make a stand.

The pursuing cavalry chased the mounted infantry and rifles right up to the walls of Fort Houston. Unfortunately a little to close to the steady cannister fire of the Horse battery. One thing i did not allow for was Jamess dice rolling. Something you would think i would be aware of by now. His first salvo from the walls and the horse battery decimated the pursuing cavalry and ensured the safe return of the retreating Americans.

Several shots of cannister and the pursuing Mexicans were gone ... For Good.

Fresh reserves were brought up by the Mexicans which were thrown at the American defenses. These suffered similar fates and were soon Routing from the fight completely decimated. The fire power coming from Fort Houston was very agressive plus of course James continually throwing 5's and 6's whislt poor old dad (Santa Anna) was doing what was expected 2's & 3's.

The Guards of the Supreme Power we brought up and set to launch an attack. Unfortuanately several shots and poor dice were enough to see them falter and become useless. At this point with 1 cavalry regiment gone and two regiments of Infantry I decided to withdraw and leave the Americans to clean up the mess... Well it is fathers day after all haha. We used Guns of Gettysburg for this scenario which worked really well at 1:20 ratio. I intend to bulk out my Mexican and American units some more using First Corps excellent range for this period. I even have some Daniel boon Texas Ranger figures to paint as well. Maybe an Alamo game is on its way. Just as soon as i can get the scaled model from Hudson & Allen. Army Painter Update

Just an update on the threat of price rises. We have decided that should we be forced to up our prices we will discontinue to stock the AP products and in fact will source similar styled products locally. We already have a few options which may come into play if this occurs. But for now don't panic buy enjoy what we believe to be a fair RRP when compared to the rest of the world. I appreciate your comments that have come through to us over the last couple of days and thank you for your support.

Army Painter Price Hike

We have unfortunately recieved an e-mail from the Army Painter Guys. It seems certain other retailers are not happy with what we are currently selling The Army Painter Products for and as a result we are being asked to up our price from $38.00 per tin for the shade to $50.00/tin and the sprays will go from $18.00 to $25.00. This will bring us into line with the others much to our dissapointment. Its a pity that once again it will be cheaper to buy off shore than from a local retailer.

The Austrians Attack Plancenoit

Played another GdB game today with a mate Mitchell at 1:40 Ratio. The game was Plancenoit which was out of the GdB Scenario book 2. We decided to use Austrians as i had no where near enough Prussians to fight this battle. The game was 24 turns which gave us plenty of both scope and time.

This is a view looking down the table from the Austrian side. Both sides started with a small division each which escallated fairly quickly into a Corps for the Austrians.

The Initial Austrian Attack force starts the advance towards the town. Turn 4 will see some 7 more Battalions arrive to reinforce the attack.

French Troops occupy the church grounds and prepare an artillery battery for firing at the white coated colums approaching

The first Austrian attacks start to go in and clear the outlying buildings of French troops. The main defensive line was sitting waiting for the on rush of Austrians. Mitch's French did not have long to wait.

Turn 4 saw the arrival of the bulk of the Austrian attacking force. I think the French took a breath when they appeared and started to look to their rear for any reinforcements. Unfortunately there were none in site.

After fresh Austrian troops arrived attacks renewed on the main town centre and the church. It took about 4 turns to capture the Church and the Buildings occupying the French Right. The town Centre was captured onlt to have the Austrians thrown out in a renewed French assualt. The arrival of fresh troops saw it safely back into Austrian hands.

The only cavalry to be seen around town was a unit of line lancers and some Austrian Dragoons. The French lancers were lucky to see off an Austrian Grenzer Square only to be driven off by the Dragoons.

Austrian Forces clear the trees in the centre of town and start to move through the Church yard. An Austrian Battalion was thrown back in the woods around the church but once again the French were driven off by fresh reinforcements. Turn 9 saw the arrival of 4 Austriaan Grenadier battalions which added some weight to the assualts.

The town was by now lost and at about turn 15 the French reinforcements arrived. There was another 7 battalions for the

Unfortunately we ran out of time at about turn 20 with 4 more turns needed to finish the scenario. Not to worry all in all it was a great game and a great scenario, one i would love to play again. I hope you enjoy the pictures and look forward to our next game.

1:40 GdB Napoleonic game

Today a friend of mine Mark Piper came over for a Napoleonics games using General de Brigade at 1:40 Ratio. I really like the rules using this ratio and as the game mechanics are the same for ACW and SYW i find them easy to use and we get a good result in a reasonable time. We are basically playing at Corps level with around 16 infantry battalions plus cavalry and guns.
This is a shot of the table at the start of turn one. The French were deployed on the right of screen and both small villages and the large farm seen in the distant background. It was the British who were trying to force their way into Southern France from left to right.

The above shot is of the British approaching the French centre left flank. And yes as you can see i have not finished the bases on my French, hopefully i will have them done soon.

The fight for the farm house on the far French Right turned out to be a desperate affair. A battalion from the 4th Swiss regiment held out for part of the game but was evicted by two British battalions. The Farmhouse was later retaken by a legere battalion thrown in by my brother Ken. It stayed in French hands until the end of the game.

The small village in the centre of the French line was the same story as the Farmhouse. A dessperate fight ensured by a battalion of Legere and although pushed back by two British battalions, a fierce bayonet charge saw then regain control of the village once more.

The only cavalry action of the game was an opportunity charge by the 9th Lancers which failed to stop two British battalions throwing back the 2nd / 4th Swiss Regt. as the flowed around the Farm House. It was a Fresh Battalion and a Foot battery which stalled the Brits. Unfortunately my camera died and i was not able to take any other pics. We called it quits at 315pm and decided it was a close run thing for both. I think the French held their ground but only just. It was a good effort by the Brits considering they had to take some heavy cover. The only thing i was upset about was that i had a heavy Cuirassier Brigade sitting just off centre waiting for orders which failed to activate. These bad boys will have to wait for another time, perhaps we will see a cuirassier division at full gallop. Nathan if you read this i need some Cuirassier command figures, what have you got in your range?

Imagin-nations Cuirassiers

Just finished 4 troopers for Craigs Imagin-nations army. There is another 4 troopers to do to finish the unit. The figures are Front Rank WSS Austrian Cuirassiers which have been used for the imagin-nations scene. We are having a Napoleonic Game hopefully on the weekend and i will hopefully be posting some pic of that so stay tuned.

CSA Charging

I have decided to give FoW a go and i am in the process of getting an order together for their basic WW2 range which will include the rule book and supplements as well as of course their unit packs etc... We are also going to look at open days with participation games and sausage sizzle etc.. for those gamers who are happy to come along check our products and have a chat or a game. Game Over

The opposition has gone and the room is left in piece. The table is 14'x 6' which is a good size to host many different games. I have placed some great prints around the walls to make it more interesting and store all my painted armies in plastic storgae boxes under the table.

General de Brigade

Today i played a General de Brigade game with a mate Mark Piper his son Rob, my brother Ken, and my oldest son James. It was a British Portugese V French game of around 16 units per side. We have elected to use a ratio of 1:40 so an average battalion is 16 figures strong. The scenario was a simple on with The British Allied forces needing to hold the river crossing and fortified farm. The French started with great success forcing the Highlaanders our of the farmn surprisingly in the first round of combat helped by a really bad dice role from Mark. French success continued pretty much through the whole game which ended with the colapse of the British right flank. The rules were great and worked really well using the firing charts from Die Kriegskunst the SYW variant of General de Brigade which we also like to use.

CSA Firing Line and Mtd Command

Confederate 6pdr

Prince George Regiment

Finally i have finished the Prince George Regiment of the Danish Army for the WSS period. Its a 20 Figure Battalion. The First Battalion of all Danish Regiments had the Grenadiers attached which is why i have added 4 grenadier figures to the 1st Battalion. The second battalion will be at the normal 16 figures which i think is a good average working on a 1:40 ratio. My Painting Area

I decided to take a few pictures of my painting area. I have some Perry Napoleonics that i am currently re baseing on 40 x 40 squares to use with General De Brigade on a 1:40 Ratio. The Skirmish bases are a trial to see how it works as this is how the regiments skirmishes will appear when deployed. I have also decided to start a new project which is a Danish Malbarian Army of about 10 battalions. This is the Grenadier company of the Prince George Regiment with the final coat of Army Painter Matt anti shine to follow. All first Battalions had the Grenadier company attached. As i finish more i will post some further pic's. The other picture is my some Oliver who has started his own painting service $6.00 for Foot figure & $4.00 for Horses. He is currently painting and basing some wargames factory Celts for Gavin Shanks which are nearly done.

Its a Good Day to be Prussian

I spent Thursday at my friend Mark Temples place and we had a most enjoyable SYW game my Prussians against an elite corp of French. The Prussians were myself and youngest son Oliver with the French being Mark and another good guy Brett who was up from Melbourne. Whilst the French were out numbered considerably they were of exceptional quality being mostly Guards and Grenadiers. In the end Prussian command and control with some nice fire power and great Cavalry won the day. "Go those great Cuirassiers"

Easter Muster Weekend 09

The Easter Muster has ended for another year and was yet again an excellent weekend for socialising and war gaming. Thanks again go to Gerry Webb from Castaway Arts for hosting the weekend. I have included some photos of some of the games that were there, these are the large Sudan Game put on by my friend Scott Robertson, A plains War game which looked like excellent fun hosted by my other Friend and gaming companion Mark Temple, and last but not least there is a picture of a Doctor Who game hosted by Allan and Gavin which also looked liked a great game with some fantastic scenery. For Battleline Scenics, we had a good couple of days coming away with a couple of battalions of painted Napoleonic Prussians from my friend Nathan Vinson at Elite miniatures (excellent) and a new project which i have started and will post some initial pictures of soon. This is an Italian Battalion of six companies for the Sudan figures supplied by Castaway Arts, to this i will add a company (10 figures) of light infantry, two mountain guns and a unit of lancers. ACW Game

I know its been awhile since i last posted but we have been busy getting a new web site up and running which i hope will solve any of the old issues. A little while ago i had an ACW game with a mate of mine Mark Temple. Once again it was very enjoyable with the out come being a draw. The Union left flank was about to become under a lot of pressure as it was being flanked whilst the confederate left flank was giving way under similar circumstances. Die Kriegskunst SYW

On Saturday Scott Robertson, Mark Piper, Russell Nichols, my son James and myself played a SYW scenario using the new Die Kriegskunst General de Brigade variant rules for SYW. The Scenario was Moys 7th September 1757 fought originally between the Prussians and Austrians. Since we lacked any Austrians we decided to play using the French as the defenders and a combined British and Prussian army as the assaulting force. The battle started as per the scenario with the French losing the Heights by about the 4th turn. From that point on it was a fairly even contest until the Heights were again over run by this time a Prussian Assault. The game concluded pretty much a draw with the French most likely being forced to withdraw. I have included some pictures below which i hope you enjoy. The table and figures are my own in what i call the war games room. Another friend of mine who could not stay for the game Gavin Shanks called in to pick up some nice figures and scenics (thanks for the sale mate) hope you can stay next time.

Xmas WW2 game

Every year my friend Mark Temple puts on a couple of days of WW2 skirmish games. These are well organised and highly enjoyable. Its almost a Christmas "must do" each year which my son Oliver looks forward to as he has a great WW2 collection in 28mm and loves gaming the period. This year the Americans can on with a recon force which to Marks delight got into all sorts of trouble with a German 37mm A/T gun. Although out number and with limited reinforcements the Germans actually came out on top. Its played with all 28mm figures using our own in house rules which play quite well for skirmish type games.

Latest Projects

Well its been a fair while since i have last posted and there has been lots happening with alot of new products and bits and pieces. My new years resolution is to up date my blog alot more regularly so this is the first step. Below are a couple of pictures of some of the new Victorix figures that we currently have in stock painted by my son Oliver who is without doubt getting to be one of the best painters i have seen around my neck of the woods. Unfortunately the photos do not do justice but it gives you an idea. The Spanish Napoleonic artillery gun and crew was painted by yours truly using the Army Painter Quick shade system which i think turned out quite nicely, i have not completed the basing as i wanted to get the pictures on here. One for the Republic

Last weekend Scott, my son James and myself played a Republican Roman V Turkish Allied army game. It was the first outing for my newly purchased Romans (thanks Scott) and their first victory under their new command. We played the game at Scotts place using his excellent desert terrain and the War Hammer ancient rules. It was a great day of Wine, Beer and victory enjoyed by all and one which i hope we will play again soon. The objective was to capture the enemy's camp or force a retreat. The Allied army come out of the town to meet the Romans and although superior in Cavalry did not have enough quality troops to win the day especially when their best infantry unit turned and fled back to the town without laying a blow.

War Hammer Great War

About a month or so ago Scott Robertson, Mark Piper, James Jowett, and myself decided to have a early War ww1 Game here at my place. Both Scott and myself have played the War Hammer Great War rules a few times now and have both agreed that they are a simple and enjoyable set of rules for this period. At present we are limited in the size of engagements due to troop numbers but both of us are going to work on increasing the troop numbers. I have started an early war French battallion and Scott has ordered quite alot of Austrians and already has a great number of Russians for this period. I have included some photos of the game which i hope looks ok.

Under The Lilly Banners

My friend Scott Robertson, Son James and myself decided to play a Deluge game using the Under The Lilly Banner Rules set. The forces ere Austrian/ Danish (myself) against a mix of Brandenburgs (James) and Poles/swedes (Scott). This was held at my place in the Games room on a 14 x 6 foot table. Scenics supplied by Battleline Scenics ofcourse. This first picture shows the initial deployments of the two armies.

The Austrian Heavy Cuirassier brigade moves forward to engage.

On the left flank the Austrian Light Cavalry moved to engage being eventually forced back slowly.

At the end of the day it was a close loss for the Austrians being forced to withdraw. I think their commander had to much of the red wine on offer the night before.

The Great War

This is my first post for a while as there haas been lots happening and i have been really flat out. Recently i joined a group of friends to play and try out the new War Hammer Great War rules. Robert Fletcher was good enough to supply the table which has some great terrain on and a real nice set up. We played early war Germans (Robert & Myself) against the Russians, (Scott Robertson & Russ Nichols). This turned out to be an excellent game and enjoyed by all.

The Germans were comming on from the left side of the picture and had to take both towns.

This picture is of the Germans advancing toward their objectives. The main one of which was the large town seen in the top picture. This ended up being to much for the Germans who suffered from machine gun fire from the town as they crossed semi open terrain.

This is a picture of a German Guards Platoon assaulting a Russian position. After two hard turns of fighting the Russians VERY happily repulsed the Guards much to the delight of certain players (Scott)lol.

Towwnsville Trip

Last weekend my son Oliver and i were invited to Townsville for the long weekend for a few games and some scenic presentations. we stayed at a friend of mines place Nathan Vinson who owns Elite Miniatures here in Australia. Thanks again Nathan and crew for your hospitality and games. I have included below some pic's of the games one being Napoleonic and the other an ancients game. These were played at John McGuire's home who not only has, i think the best collection of figures in Australia but puts on a great spread and is very welcoming.

The Napoleonics game was played using a set of rules being developed by another friend of mine Andrew Parr. These are a quick play set of simple rules which everyone enjoyed using and are very easy to pick up for the first timer.

The Ancients game was cantred around the Fall of the West, Romans v Barbarians. Unfortunatrely the Romans were out numbered and eventually cracked under the pressure of the Barbarian onslaught.

40mm Sash & Saber AWI

This means that as of late May 2008 we can provided a box of 30 Imperial Romans and at a later date Celts for the price of $36.00. zthese are great figures and will add to bulk up many a metal legion or simply make it cheaper to field a nice size force suitable for any table top.

New 15mm Buildings

I just thought i would let you know about a couple of new building models which we have got in to go with our raange of 15mm products. These are a house and a tower, both come pre painted and ready for action as can be seen in the pictures. They are both priced at $35.00 each and would make a nice addition to anyones game terrain.

1644 Deluge game

Today a friend of mine Mark Temple came over and we decided to have a small but enjoyable 1644 game. Mark has a fine collection of English Civil War figures. To this we added some of my sons Brandenburg's to form some allies which were pitted against my Imperialist Austrian forces. The table is 6' x 14' and is down stairs in what i call the war games room which is equipped with some appropriate pictures on the wall.

It was a hard fought game with Austrian and Danish forces pressing home attacks in the centre allowing some Cavalry to sweep around on the left flank.

This picture is part of the Brandenburg allied centre and right we used the foundry set of 1644 rules which while enjoyable was disappointing. At the end of the day Mark and i have decided to try our hand at putting our own set of rules together and will certainly post any future information on this.

New Product lines

It has been our intention to increase our product lines by including other manufacturers figures and scenics. After talks with 1st Corp we can now say that Battleline Scenics is the sole distributor of their figure range including Curteys Miniatures. This is great news for us as it extends our product range to cover other periods outside of ACW. Other developments this week have also included the ability to stock the Perry Plastics ACW range which we hope to have in stock in the next few weeks and 2 more manufacturers which we can now distribute for, those being Sash and Sabre and Front Rank. If we can help anyone who is interested in these ranges please do not hesitate to contact us.

Easter Muster

Over the Easter Weekend Gerry Webb from Castaway Arts held a small but very successful convention. There were quite a number of games going open to all who wanted to play along with some great trade stands. The games varied from Dr. Who to Deluge to American Civil War. Great fun was had by all with the weekend held in fantastic spirit. Anyone who missed out going truly missed a great weekend. I have included some pictures of some of the games for suggest that everyone marks this weekend on there calendar for next year.
